St. Martin De Porres Priory, Kisumu

St. Martin de Porres Dominican priory is located in Kanyakwar village, Kisumu County, Kenya. It is the first Priory to be erected in the Eastern African Dominican Vicariate.

The priory also serves as an initial formation house, Novitiate, for the vicariate. As such, you would expect to find an amicable blend of Novice Friars and Senior Friars, engaged in studies and teaching, among other apostolates as well as keeping a lively community rooted in prayer and contemplation, particularly the daily mass and the divine office (Office of Readings, Morning Prayer, Midday Prayer and Rosary, Evening Prayer and Night Prayer).

Also attached to the community is St. Catherine’s Dominican Retreat House, which serves as an apostolate and outreach ministry for the Friars. Through this project, they share with the surrounding community the fruit of their contemplation, bestowed upon them by Divine Grace.

St. Dominic’s Priory, Nairobi

St. Dominic’s priory is situated in Karen, Kenya, Masai West Road. It serves as the second Priory in the Eastern African Dominican Vicariate.

The priory also serves as the House of studies for the vicariate. As such, you would expect to find a fine mix of students and professors, engaged in studies and teaching, among other apostolates as well as keeping a lively community rooted in prayer, particularly the daily mass and the divine office.

The students are vibrant, full of humor and dedicated to their studies, household chores, liturgy, and the regular observance, under the guidance of the Student Master and the other friars, who blend very well with the students.

St. Catherine of Siena House

SCSH is located in Kitsuru, along Peponi Road, Central Deanery, Archdiocese of Nairobi.

The membership of the house is composed of Emmanuel Mulu, OP (Superior, Pastor so St. Catherine of siena Parish and Advisor of the Holy See on matters Justice), Gideon Kizito Muchira, OP (Community member and Vicar of the Vicariate of Eastern Africa; immediate former pastor), Leo Simon Itabari Mwenda, OP (Also serving as the Postulant Director and Syndic of the Vicariate and Religious Promoter of the Dominican Laity), Charles Kato (Newly assigned from St. Martin de Porres Priory), Luke Bett (Currently studying in Rome) and Thomas Odhiambo (Prior in Angola).

APOSTOLATES

The Community serves St. Catherine of Siena Parish and two other outstations, that is, St. Martins Kibagare and the University of Nairobi School of Business Studies along lower Kabete road. 

Apart from the parochial ministry, the friars also serve other institutions and entities such as Teachers service commission, St. Mary’s international school, St Mary Musongari. They offer retreats, recollections and talks to various schools, to different lay groups, to different men and women religious congregations. The friars also offer ongoing formation to the deanery catechists as well as offering spiritual, moral and intellectual seminars to university students.

Similarly, the brothers provide counselling services to the teachers, students, workers, married couples and others. They are also involved in justice and peace, conflict and resolution management ministries.
